Who are the Alkimos Raiders?

Alkimos Raiders are association teams that are managed by the Wanneroo Basketball Association and play in their Junior Domestic Competition. The WBA has had a long presence in the northern corridor and have had a 10-year plan to have domestic teams in the region. With the WBA’s northern clubs being at or near capacity, the demand for more teams for residents in the north of Wanneroo is at an all time high. With future basketball facilities in Alkimos underway, domestic teams in the region are a priority. The City of Wanneroo has also identified a need for more basketball in the area and hence the Raiders were born.

Who are the Wanneroo Basketball Association (WBA)?

Wanneroo Basketball Association is one of the largest basketball Associations in Western Australia with over 5,000 participants playing in their domestic competitions. For more information visit their website here.

How do basketball seasons work?

The WBA runs two seasons of their Junior Domestic Competition each year. The Summer season runs from approximately October to March/April and the Winter season runs from approximately April/May to September with breaks during the school holidays.

What days are competition games played?

Games are currently played on either Monday night (U18M A/B), Friday night (U16M A/B, U16F and U18M) or Saturday (U8 to U16 M C). These allocations are subject to change due to venue availability and team nominations. Alkimos Raiders teams will play against the other 7 domestic clubs within the Wanneroo Basketball Association.

How do I register and pay fees?

Registration is processed online as are the payment of fees. This is actioned via PlayHQ. A link will be provided when a place in a team has been confirmed. This link should not be shared with anyone else. Payments are accepted via credit card.

Do you have to have uniform when playing games?

Yes. All players must wear the Alkimos Raiders uniform when playing competition games. Alkimos Raiders playing shorts will be available for purchase from our website soon. In the meantime, players are required to wear plain black basketball shorts with no pockets for games and they must not have stripes or logos. As per Wanneroo Basketball Association Competition Rules, any player with pockets in their shorts will be unable to take the court. Bike shorts or tights cannot be worn as playing shorts. Plain black basketball shorts with no pockets are available for purchase from various retailers around Joondalup.

Any lost or damaged jerseys will incur a replacement fee of $50.00 which must be paid prior to a new jersey being provided or at the end of the season.

How many age groups and divisions are there?

Alkimos Raiders has the potential to have teams across all age groups from U8s to U18s. The Junior Domestic Competition has grades/divisions ranging from A/B grade for the more advanced players/teams to C/D grades for the more beginner players/teams. The age groups for the upcoming Winter 2025 season are listed below.

How are Raiders teams formed?

There is a great deal of work that goes into forming the teams. A combination of factors are considered including the player’s age, ability, friends in teams etc. Once the teams are formed, they are communicated to the team’s coach who will then contact each family.

Who coaches the teams?

Teams are coached by volunteer coaches who are approved and allocated by the Raiders. The WBA run coaching clinics throughout the year for coaches. All coaches who are not exempt must hold a current Working with Children check.

When do we find out what team we are playing in?

Once teams are finalised, the allocated coach for that team will contact each family to introduce themselves. This generally occurs in the school holidays prior to the season starting.

When will fixtures be available and how do I find them?

The Raiders will notify coaches and team managers when the fixtures have been released for the season. There are multiple ways find the fixtures. The best way is via the Alkimos Raiders website via the fixtures section. You can also find them on the PlayHQ website and the My Hoops app.

Will our team play at the same venue every week?

Yes, the WBA try to keep this consistent for the season. This is subject to change in the event of venue unavailability. The WBA will notify the Raiders of these changes and they will then pass these on to the teams as soon as possible.

Games are played at a variety of venues including but not limited to:

What rules do we play under?

Alkimos Raiders teams will all play in the Wanneroo Basketball Association’s Junior Domestic Competition and will follow their Competition Rules. These can be found on their website here.

Do we have to pay fee to watch the team play?

No. All entry fees to all venues are covered in the registration fees.

​

What is expected of me as a parent/guardian?

A parent from each team will be asked to score each game. The team manager will put together a scoring roster for the parents so you may only need to score twice per season. Guidelines for scoring can be sent to you upon request. All teams will be looking for a volunteer to be team manager, so it is always appreciated when someone puts their hand up to take on that role.
